Reflection on Oral Presentation

Socially Awkward Penguin - Oral Presentation for the Class? Time to Drop the class.

Behind the Scenes

After the dry-run presentation, my group received a lot of comments from our friendly teacher and friends. Some of the major one was most of us had minimum or no eye contact. This was because our group did not have a meeting to practice as a group and to tie down lose ends as a whole. Most of us just did the rehearsing on our own.

As for myself, i did not do much preparation; i only wrote our my script without even rereading it. Then came the dry-run, as i did not rehearse my own speech, it turned out really bad. I was nervous throughout the presentation, tried to refer to my script but was too messy to find my points within an instance, therefore i gave up my script entirely and decided to depend on my memory. It ended up having myself being a bill collector with the A4 size paper hanging right in front of my chest.

After learning our lesson, we decided to practice more as a group so that we could link each other's part better and to get comments on own parts. My team mate Huang Huan mentioned a very important point for my part. She said that my part of conclusion should be convincing and not a 'closing speech' type of presentation. It really woke me up and i brainstormed to finally produce the work that i presented on the official day.

On Stage

My team mates did very well during the actual run. They sounded confident and had very good eye contact. They managed to deliver the information well to the audience. As for myself, i felt more calm and even though i was rather nervous during the start of my part, i managed to get things under control and delivered a rather satisfactory conclusion which tied things down with all the parts that my team mate covered.

Off Stage

We received rather good feedbacks and thank you very much for them. I feel that i can deliver a good presentation from now on. It was really as simple as POP!

P.S Charles and Xiuxian, sorry for the rather negative feedback, just wanted to let you be aware of the points so that you can improve even further than you have.

  2. You did well, Malcolm! You have a very calm expression when you presented, your points were very clear and easy to grasp. Perhaps, you can work more on the voice modulation for emphasize in important parts. And try to minimize the "yak"..haha..peace..

In fact, for the scripts, I don't think it is helpful in presentation. It is only helpful during preparation. However, some small pieces of paper note will help if we can lay out our points systematically.

    Cheers! :)

  3. Well done, Malcolm! I am really grateful to have you in our group. You always have interesting ideas to add in our project. You really added many colors to our project. I think you have talent in story telling and I really enjoyed the way you describe things. I believe you will do presentation better and better as you are very competent in oral communications! Best wishes!=D

  4. I agree with Huang Huan, without Malcolm we will probably be staring at each other during meetings than discussing the proposal. A lot of time saved from brainstorming for the topic of the proposal as ideas keep flowing out non stop from Malcolm.

For the script, he definitely does not need it as he has the ability to talk non stop about a topic without any preparation based on my past experience. He probably just want something to hold in his hand.=)
