I believe that most of us had experienced many cases of miscommunication,
that is the message we were trying to pass on to others ended up having its
meaning or content distorted. A typical example would be games that we
have played before like using hand signals or verbal means to pass a simple
word or sentence down the row and the final person have to say out loud the
message he received. Most of the time, as the number of people down the row
increases, the message being passed ended up being more distorted, where a
simple word like annihilation would end up changing to an apple.

To me, effective communication is defined as being able to get messages
across as well as receiving information with as little distortion as possible at
the same time. It is important to me because as an undergraduate and even
after i start working, teamwork is important and with teamwork lies
communication. With effective communication, efficiency in any projects and
presentations would be greatly increased. When efficiency increases, work
quality and the time spent on it would increase as well.

Living in a stressful environment since young, I realised that being efficient
in anything i do is vital in order to blend into our society. On the other hand,
showing any signs of inefficiency, even a slight one would lead to adverse
consequences. That is why effective communication is so important to people
striving to be successful in life, as no human being can survive on his own;
teamwork is essential and so is effective communication.

  1. Hi Malcolm,

You raise a good example about the passing message game. I agree with you that it has some elements of effective communication. The senders must be aware of what they are acting on and think creatively in a way that produce an act that is easily understandable by the recipients. Besides that the recipients must also be smart enough to catch what is acted by the actors. However, the most interesting part of the game is actually seeing the message get distorted along the row.haha..

You mentioned in the second paragraph that "With effective communication, efficiency in any projects and presentations would be greatly increased." However, in the next sentence you wrote:"When efficiency increases, work
quality and the time spent on it would increase as well."
I would rather think that as efficiency increases, the work quality increases and we spend lesser time on it. Correct me if I am wrong.

    Cheers :)

  2. An overlook of the use of words on my part. Improve would be a better word in the case.

  3. I agree with you that effective communication and teamwork cannot be separated. Without communication no discussion can take place as no one can read each other minds. In order for teamwork to work, ideally the tasks required have to be separated effectively and combined seamlessly as though it is done by one person through effective communication in the team.

  4. LOL, I realised that your blog background is a fiddler crab.

Anyway, I agree that effective communication is only effective if the message is brought across to the other party properly without any distortion. However, often in real life, the message gets distorted because of everyone's personal interpretation of various gestures based on their own experiences and point of view.

I also agree with Yicun that teamwork and effective communication cannot be separated. I guess that communication is essential in all aspects of life!

  5. woots my blog has alot of comments now. so that crab is fiddler crab, took that at pasir ris park and i call it the charger crab xD.

i personally feel that no matter how well one communicates, one will never achieve 100% efficiency in bringing across that message. just like any other devices, programs etc. therefore we could only achieve as much as possible by being sensitive towards all aspects of the listener; non-verbals, body languages etc.

  6. Yes it's so true that getting people to work with you requires communication skills. Leaders necessarily need to be good communicators if they want their staff or teams to cooperate and work with them towards a common goal. If you look around you many people hate their jobs because their bosses don't communicate well with them.
